Which to use

Most 履歴書 forms expect 和暦 (era years). Match whatever the form or your school certificate uses.

元年 = year 1

The first year of an era is written 元年, not 1年, so 令和元年 is 2019.

Transition years

1989 and 2019 each belong to two eras. Use the month to pick the right one.

和暦・西暦 FAQ

Should my Japanese resume use 和暦 or 西暦?

Most 履歴書 forms expect 和暦 (era years like 令和・平成). Some digital forms accept 西暦 (Western years). Match whatever your school certificate or the form itself uses, and keep it consistent throughout the resume.

What is 元年?

元年 (gannen) means the first year of an era. The year an era begins is written 元年 rather than 1年, for example, 令和元年 is 2019 and 平成元年 is 1989.

Why does one Western year show two eras?

Eras change mid-year, so a transition year belongs to two eras. 1989 is both 昭和64年 and 平成元年, and 2019 is both 平成31年 and 令和元年. Enter the month to get the exact reading.

How do I convert 平成7年 to a Western year?

Add the era start year and subtract one: 平成 began in 1989, so 平成7年 is 1989 + 7 − 1 = 1995. This tool does it for you in both directions.
